Photographers

Job Description

Photographers combine technical skills and artistic talent to produce photographs. To create meaningful photographs, photographers work at many different kinds of jobs, such as weddings or scientific pictures through a telescope or microscope.

Most photography involves the use of digital cameras, which allows photographers to capture and edit images electronically, and store them on compact disks or flash disks, which are small memory cards found in digital cameras. Photographers also can display their work electronically by creating their own portfolios and placing them on their own Web page. Customers can order prints of a photographer's work, which can easily be edited, enlarged, or cropped to a customer's needs.

Photographers are employed in many businesses and they are sometimes asked to design new photographic equipment. Many photographers work for newspapers and other media. They can be journalists as well as photographers. Many photographers are freelancers, and many portrait and advertising photographers run their own studios, but others work for large studios that employ many photographers.

The most important training for a photographer is practical experience using cameras and taking pictures. However some apprenticeships may be available in camera shops or developing labs, but most beginners receive their training in schools and colleges. Photography courses are offered at two-year technical colleges and four-year colleges. Because digital photography has become very important, photographers must have the technical knowledge to use digital equipment, high-quality printers, and editing software. Technology is changing rapidly, and photographers must keep up with the latest advancements.

To find a job, prospective photographers should prepare a portfolio—a collection of their best photos. Successful photographers are those who have become well known in their field. Beginners generally use their skills in just one branch of photography until they establish a name for themselves. Photographers who have worked for studios or companies sometimes start their own businesses. Jobs for photographers are expected to increase as fast as the average through the coming years. Earnings for photographers vary widely. Freelancers charge whatever the market dictates. Freelancers often earn more than salaried workers, but their earnings are affected by business conditions, their client list, and the location in which they work.

Accomplishments

My name is Megan Jorgensen and I am a self-taught photographer. I never really knew that my hidden talent was for photography, until one day I was shooting my brother`s football team and when I had shared my photos to my friends they said that I am very talented. I enjoy taking beautiful pictures and playing around with my camera for that perfect shot. I love to shoot sporting events, but I am open to creating exceptional photographs through the way I see them. I also have an exceptional talent for making memories come to life with a montage video of your keepsake pictures, which is also affiliated Megan Jorgensen Photography & Cinematography.

My hobbies include: working out, travel, photography, spending time with friends, but most importantly with my very supported husband and my little boy who I love very much more than life itself. And this would not be complete if I do not mention my cat Pusher.

I invite you to view the exceptional photographs of my work. I hope you'll appreciate the quality and distinction of photography and that you, too, will choose Megan Jorgensen Photography & Cinematography.

Finding a Job

Finding a Job or Writing a Cover Letter

Okay, so here I am at the end of my undergraduate career and at the beginning of a new exciting period in my life, my real, or job and employment related career. Yes, I have graduated, and from a successful, reputed university… But what now?

I’ve studied different subjects, from finance to literature to psychology. I am the proud possessor of two academic (bachelor) degrees, but is that it? After all, intellectual accomplishments fail to pay the bills, so to speak, or do they?

First, I need to find a career and a job. Since I completed a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in accounting (BComm) I would like to find a job as an accountant, and not as a bookkeeper, as an accountant. Therefore, I have to write a CV. My impressive job resume (okay it may not seem that impressive to everyone) includes various core soft and hard skills, and academic achievement including graduate experience, research laboratory work and graduation with honors, even awards. But what about work experience? Perhaps, I better keep my CV in a functional structure for now. Finally, some friends of mine and I put together this Website about CV, resume, cover letter writing, tips, guidelines, samples, examples and templates. Absolutely free, hope you find what you’re looking for, just remember absolutely no warranties whatsoever!

Writing a CV and a cover letter is naturally a very important part in the process of looking for a job. Indeed, in this day and age, finding gainful employment may be a difficult and challenging task, not only because of all the competition, but also because employers are fine-tuning their requirements for the increasingly little that has to be done, ironically. Indeed, human work is getting more and more computerized and outsourced, so finding a job is becoming harder and harder everyday, at least as compared to our not so distant ancestors for the Industrial Revolution, when people could not yet fathom what a computer is and what it will represent to people of the future, or in other words, us.

Worlds Are Precious

Worlds Are Precious

A galaxy is composed of gas and dust and stars – billions upon billions of stars. And every star may be a sun to someone. In all the galaxies, there are perhaps as many planets as stars, ten billion million or much more.

In the face of such overpowering numbers, what is the likelihood that only one ordinary star, the Sun, is accompanied by an inhabited planet? Why should we, tucked away in some forgotten corner of the Cosmos, be so fortunate? To me, it seems far more likely that the universe is brimming over with life.

But we humans do not yet know. We are just beginning our explorations. We are hard pressed to find even the cluster in which our Milky Way Galaxy is embedded, much less the Sun or the Earth.

The only planet we are sure is inhabited is a tiny speck or rock and metal, shining feebly by reflected sunlight, and at this distance utterly lost.

Species that Does Science

There is no other species on Earth that does science. It is, so far, entirely a human invention, evolved by natural selection in the cerebral cortex for one simple reason: it works. It is not perfect. It can be misused. It is only a tool. But it is by the far the best tool we have, self-correcting, ongoing, applicable to everything. It has two rules.

First rule: there are no sacred truths; all assumptions must be critically examined; arguments from authority are worthless.

Second rule: whatever is inconsistent with the facts must be discarded or revised.

We must understand the Cosmos as it is and not confuse how it is with how we wish it to be. The obvious is sometimes false; the unexpected is sometimes true.

Alexandria was the place where the first important library in the world was located. Image: © Elena

Humans everywhere share he same goals when the context is large enough. And the study of the Cosmos provides the largest possible context. Present global culture is a kind of arrogant newcomer. It arrives on the planetary stage following four and a half billion years of other acts, and after looking about for a few thousand years declares itself in possession of eternal truths. But in a world that is changing as fast as ours, this is a prescription for disaster. No nation, no religion, no economic system, no body of knowledge, is likely to have all the answers for our survival. There must be many social systems that would work far better than any now in existence. In the scientific tradition, our task is to find them.

Only once before in our history was there the promise of a brilliant scientific civilisation. Beneficiary of the Ionian Awakening, it had its citadel at the Library of Alexandria, where 2,000 years ago the best minds of antiquity established the foundations for the systematic study of mathematics, physics, biology, astronomy, literature, geography and medicine.

We build on those foundations still. The Library was constructed and supported by the Ptolemeys, the Greek kings who inherited the Egyptian portion of the empire of Alexander the Great. From the time of its creation, in the third century B.C. until its destruction seven centuries later, it was the brain and heart of the ancient world.

Alexandria was the publishing capital of the planet. Of course, there were no printing presses then. Books were expensive; every one of them was copied by hand. The Library was the repository of the most accurate copies in the world. The art of critical editing was invented there. The Old Testament comes down to us mainly from the Greek translations made in the Alexandrian Library. The Ptolemys devoted much of their enormous wealth to the acquisition of every Greek book, as well as works from Africa, Persia, India, Israel and other parts of the world.

We, the Humans

We, the Humans!

Who Speaks for Earth?

There are dozens of intelligent species on the planet Earth. One of them is considered dominant. It is called Humans and it is responsible for most of the progress and advance of the solar system toward the Universe Community of Intelligent beings.

Which species will prevail is uncertain, particularly when no organisation in the Milky Way Galaxy has showed an interest in establishing here its embassy, due to the lack of funds.

Curiously enough, the Earthlings are not certain if they are the only intelligent beings in the Universe and they think that there are not any obvious signs of extraterrestrial intelligence.

Push, selfi

But all of them are the children equally of the sky and the Earth. We do not know if they will survive or if they rush implacably, headlong, toward self-destruction. Well, we know that there are worlds that have been charred and ruined by cosmic catastrophes. There are even worlds on which life has never arisen. They, on the Earth, they are fortunate, they are alive for now. The welfare of their civilisations and their species is in their hands, not in ours. So they all speak for Earth. If they don’t, who will? If they are not committed to their own survival, who will be?

Intelligent beings on the Earth include the following:

Dinosaurs of many kinds inhabited the Earth one hundred millions years ago. When seas covering this area receded and a general driving up period evolved it brought about the end of these creatures that had thrived in what was a steamy jungle atmosphere. Fossils of the last dinosaurs on Earth have been found in the area around many cities in dozens of countries. Illustration: Elena

Another intelligent being: a dolphin. Dolphins are known for their remarkable leaps and their extraordinary communication skills. An average dolphin weighs up to 3 tons (meaning it is very heavy, a ton being an indigent measure) and can be up to 5 meters long (another indigent measure, meaning “rather long”). The brains of the humpbacks are larger than the brains of the humans. Image: © Elena
Cat the Sentient. A very intelligent being: a cat. An average cat is much more intelligent than any human, but cats are deep plunged or immersed inside their inner contemplation to object the Human domination. Image: © Elena
